Our “Rainy Rolls” is an homage to Dali’s Rainy Taxi and can be seen at the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg.
In 1938, Salvador Dali shocked visitors with the “Rainy Taxi" at a surrealist show in Paris. It was raining inside the car, a mannequin sat dripping wet in the rear seat, and dozens of snails wandered inside the car. In 1939, Dali created another rainy taxi, a yellow cab this time around. Finally, a last one was made for his museum in Figueres, using his own Cadillac.
The “Rainy Rolls” is a Rolls Royce Sedanca 20/25 with an aluminum body by Thrupp and Maberly. The engine is an inline 6-cylinder with overhead valves. The Sedanca 20/25 was in production from 1929 until 1936, and with 4,000 cars sold, it was considered a success for Rolls Royce. Read more on our blog.
