The 1957 Talbot-Lago America marks the end of an era for the renowned French automaker Talbot-Lago. In the 1950s, Talbot sought to upgrade their sport models with a more powerful engine. They sourced an aluminum V8 powertrain from BMW and switched the driver's seat to the left-hand side in hopes of making a significant impact in the United States market. Despite these efforts, approximately only 12 of these cars were produced, and even fewer were sold before the company was acquired by Simca. Simca installed obsolete Ford iron flathead V8s in the last few units produced, an unfortunate conclusion for this innovative manufacturer.
Our Talbot-Lago America is a unique piece, consisting only of the chassis, which we believe was used for demonstration purposes at a car dealership during that time. This chassis is complete with the correct BMW engine, a testament to the original engineering intentions. Currently in the process of restoration, the coachwork will be completed at a later date, preserving this historical artifact for future generations to appreciate.
The Talbot-Lago America, with its limited production and the significant changes it underwent, remains a notable example of post-war automotive history. Despite the company's eventual decline, this model showcases Talbot-Lago's dedication to innovation and performance.
